Construction and living spaces

The structure of the construction industry has always been predominantly characterized by single, individual properties. In comparison to industrial mass production, it has its own unique connection to personalization. Personalization in the areas of construction and living spaces may refer to the long-term personalization of spaces (floor plans, equipment and organizational features) as well as the specific use of places (heat, comfort, lighting and so on). In addition to the user-centered design of common spaces, individual construction and design activities involve legal and sustainability-related requirements in the field of construction and living spaces. Aspects relating to a healthy and livable environment also need to be considered.

The focus area of construction and living spaces at the Center Mass Personalization covers the following fields of research and development:

  • Personalization of rooms for exclusive use, such as office spaces
  • Personalization of common rooms and buildings used by a group of people, such as apartments, hotels and classrooms
  • Personalization in public areas, such as districts, cities and municipalities
  • Research into systems engineering and applications in the field of personalization of living spaces: Smart Home, New Work and Smart City concepts, for example
  • Research and development relating to livable environments: sustainability, climate adaptation measures, the circular economy, inclusive environments
